Re: Help on day travel from Playa Dorada
There are a number of ways to get to Sosua or Cabarete from PD. The first and most expensive is to rent a cab. This if you bargain well should cost RD$200 to Sosua - one way. If you walk out of the front gate of PD and cross the road (be careful of traffic!!) you can get a cab which carries several passengers (called a publico I think). The cost to Sosua is RD$15. The driver will try to fit 6 passengers in what is usually a Toyota Corolla!! If your Spanish is good enough you can offer to pay RD$30 to have the front seat to yourself. You can also offer to pay for the whole cab and include a tip (ie. RD$100 total) which sometimes works. The guagua's are vans with seating for about 11 to 13 into which they will try to fit as many people as possible. We hve seen as many as 27 (including small children). The cost from PD to Sosua is RD$10 and from Sosua to Cabarete RD$5. From PD to Puerto Plata the cost is RD$5. The important trick is to look as confident in the appropriate price as possible. If you are not sure ask a local. Have the right change, pay it to the driver's helper and walk away. If they try to get more from you put up a fuss - you might pay a bit more but less than what they will try to get. All in all it is a lot of fun and gets you a lot more exposure to the real Dominican Republic.
