There is nothing wrong with all-inclusives if the price is right. I got a great deal out of Toronto for the end of May, $529 plus tax, all inclusive for Casa Marina in Sosua. Hell flight alone is more than that. But do make sure you leave the resort and venture out, especially since this is your first time. That is the only way you will enjoy your trip. People that take the time to appreciate what the Dominican Republic has to offer, are those that keep going back. Those that sit by the pool all day and never bother to leave the "gates" are those that will probably complain about their resort.
As for Breezes, never stayed there. From what I understand you are close to Cabarete and Sosua, both great towns with so much to do, and safety is not a problem. You might also want to check
