I want to dance!
Last year I visited the DR with my boyfriend (we're in our 20's) and we had a wonderful time. We went out of the resort to a local "carwash" type place because we love to party and when the rum is flowing and the music's loud I love to dance. BUT my fella doesn't. At home I go out with my girlfriends and we take to the floor while the guys sit around and drink, so this isn't a problem.
I didn't want to just ask a dominican guy I'd never met before to dance, but the girl serving our table was friendly so I explained my situation in broken Spanish to her. She'd shared a couple of drinks with us and was quite chatty, so I was surprised when she seemed embarrassed by my request. I was quite drunk and just assumed she was shy, dragging her up to the dance floor anyway. The poor girl was so mortified that I let her escape before the song was even finished.
I mentioned it to one of the reps in the hotel who explained that it just wasn't the done thing, women don't dance together here and she might even have thought I was a lesbian!
Is that true? Would a dominican guy assume I was coming on to him if I asked him to dance? What's a girl supposed to do?
