Funny, I haven't changed mine yet (don't want to buggerup the settings without someone at hand who knows about these things) but today and yesterday it's been slightly better. Google was a little slow in opening, but gmail has been behaving.
When gmail won't open, try entering the url
https://mail.google.com manually (as opposed to clicking on the bookmark) and you'll see the difference.
