Kyle was successful because Miami was his last stop
DiverRed wasn't because he passed thru a non secure area after exiting customs.
Even if you are hopping on another plane, you must stay in a secured area if carrying alcohol or any other liquid over 3oz. Once you go outside of a secured area in a US airport, there is no taking the liquid back in, unless it is 3 oz or less and fits in your 1 quart ziploc bag, regardless of whatever paperwork you may have or where you purchased it. More and more international airports are subscribing to the same guidelines, and some are even more strict (UK, France).
Note: US Customs at most airports will generally put you outside of secured areas upon exiting, regardless if you have a connecting flight or not.
So just plan on packing that luscious libation in your luggage or giving it up to a TSA agent at security if you want to get on another plane. Plenty of places around to buy alcohol before the airport and get it packed.
