Ok, a poster reminded me that I left this hanging. Mr C booked us into a suite on the ferry. Still half the price of flying and it includes breakfast. The only other accommodation option still available involved sharing a bathroom so it's definitely worth it.
I will report back on the actual experience, probably in a separate thread or in that cobweb-infested chamber known as my blog.
