It's over a decade since I last spent any time in the US, so I really don't know. I would think it was slightly more expensive because of transport costs.

Some of the things we bought in the post-Christmas sales seemed like OK deals to me ($30 for jeans; two 100% cotton sheet sets and two bathtowels for $100 in Sears) but my reference points are the DR and Europe.

It was more organised than the DR with a lot of traffic cops stopping people for drink driving because it was the holiday period, but there was some crazy driving nonetheless.

We were staying with friends, apart from on Culebra where we stayed in a self-catering apartment. It was about the same, maybe slightly more expensive per person than I would expect to pay for a comparable place on the beach in the DR.
