I was at the hotel in September. I have my pictures posted at
Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach and Palace, September 2007 pictures, photos, and videos, from caribbean on webshots
"Nice" nightlife is in the eye of the beholder but there are a number of clubs to check out in the area. You can also spend some time at the new Casino Dominicus which is accessible by quick and easy shuttle, open from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. They have a disco area with dance floor which looks really great, but like all of the Dominican nightlife, it doesn't get started til quite late. Currently the only parts of the casino that are open are the games and the sports bar (and disco), but a fine dining restaurant and commercial centre with shopping are set to open in February.
Walking distance away is the disco at the Eden hotel in Dominicus. I was there on a Thursday night, "National and International Night", and once it got rolling it was a lot of fun. There is also the Star Club 10 minutes away on the road to Bayahibe. In Bayahibe you can look into the Mundo Aquatico Disco and Big Sur on the weekend. Mundo is small and dull when empty, so again make sure you go later. Big Sur is not about decoration but is cool since it's outdoors. A cab driver can get you to all of the options further than walking distance.
I can't help you with Dominican food in Dominicus, but you can check out any of the many Pico Pollo outfits and get many of the staples, like excellent fried chicken and plantain. There is a great place beside the Mundo Aquatico that offers a few other options as well, like meats in sauces, done take out style. Along the water you can check out the Bahia and Barco restaurants. Beautiful locations on the beach, particularly at sunset. I have pictures of them being loaded from my stay in Bayahibe last week.
