My husband and I just bought a house in the DR and I must admit that I find it very urgent to find a solution to the trash problem - La Romana is covered with trash of every kind and when I see kids playing baseball in a field completely clogged with plastic bottles and bags, and probably also covered with broken glass, I want to cry !
In Brazil they started trash recycling cooperatives which work very well and I don't see why it wouldn't work here. The people in the trash-covered areas are so poor that there has to be an economic incentive for them to start caring about trash - why pick up trash when you are worried about feeding your kids that day ? But if there's a financial incentive, all of a sudden it becomes a priority to clean up !
We won't be spending a lot of time in the DR since our house is just for vacations and for rentals, but I'd be very happy to join a recycling cooperative in La Romana if someone local set it up.
