From my perspective, the difference now is almost like night and day.
Well, it goes to prove a point: What ever the government, the president, the tyrant or "leader"... it's not just him or her... it's a "cultural" thing, although I don't like to use the word "culture" to justify a negative thing... culture should be a good thing... but anyway, you get the drift... it's an "everybody"-thing. Even those who don't have the power leverage to rake in anything, tend to be part of the problem when their vote becomes corrupted in hopes for a favor, unos chelitos, the wishful outlook of a home or what ever. Just yesterday I again overheard an agitated discussion of locals about whom they will or would give their vote to: "... yo no voy a votal pa el no si no me da mi qualto ete desgraciadito"!
A country gets the president which represents it's people, the president every one and each would be in good and bad.

Still, I think that Leonel at least was well intentioned... exactly! Just as many of his fellow Nationals would... at first. But now, his non-history as of having held no public offices until the presidency, which may at first have been seen as an advantage when he was a candidate, may be becoming his problem as he may not be as firmly seated as it may appear, which in turn may not allow him to take definite action against the big fish in the worst part of the whole corruption scheme, high ranking police, army and political leaders which seem to be not just covering the local drug trafficking but actually promoting it quite directly(?).
Remember the fiscal who got turned into a colador at daylight in Sousa'bajo? Now, have you observed the campaign trails and wondered how easy it could be, just for a nut case, to take out our president or any of the contenders... now imagine how easy it'd be for somebody with some power.

Anyway, the OP's subject wasn't about who we'd like, favor or hate and our reasonings behind it, but about LFR the man, his back ground(s) and so forth, and I would love to read more about that.

... J-D.
