Wow, it appears you've really got some winners in the family! Unbelievable to say the least.
The only thing I worry about you is that if you fight her for this money too much would she be capable of taking it to the next level, like paying someone to rob you etc? This happened to one of members here on DR1, they were robbed becasue of a disagreement over some money with a brother in law, the guy was completely wrong but didn't stop him from pulling a gun and stealing something.
BTW, this is for the most part rare here in the DR. In fact it is comon for people here to talk about families like this and they are never well respected but ridiculed often.
I would like to add that maybe there could be a compromise solution, like having a meeting with her and her family and taking a more concillatory tone by starting out with "I understand you have fallen on hard times, and we want to help as we are family and see if we can find a solution", and see if they will bite. More than likely any talk of blame will not work out well as these types function by the modus operandi, "It's not the truth that matters, but what can be proved". However, if they see that some amount will be paid out of the
goodness of your hearts only, it might embaress their altogether empty conscience just enough to do it.
