Also keep in mind that Punta Cana is known for one thing... the BEACH...There are something like 30,000+ hotel rooms directly on the beach and many 1000's of condos being built in all price ranges. Punta Cana has not yet been marketed as a non-inclusive/"stay at a condo" destination...To my knowledge there aren't many easily accessed public access points to the beach in the "main" area of Punta Cana/Bavaro except in the El Cortecito/Los Corales area (by the restaurant Sole')...and as of now, no real supermarkets in the area...although they *are* coming.
There seems to be a major effort going on right now to add attractions and services in theis areas (malls, restaurants, stores, etc)... I don't know how far north that will stretch, keeping the Uvero Alto area pretty remote, for awhile at least...
