Julio Tavarez wins election in NJ
Last night, Julio Tavarez won a seat on the Paterson, New Jersey City Council. He defeated incumbent Juan Torres for the seat. Tavarez is a native of Santiago, Dominican Republic. The City of Paterson holds non-partisan elections and holds them in May instead of the traditional partisan elections in November. Approximately 25% of the population in Paterson, NJ is Dominican American. With Tavarez's victory, Paterson now has two Dominican-elected city councilmembers. Paterson has the largest population of Dominicans in New Jersey.
