I don't think we can sit back and criticize small market teams for "crying broke" because they aren't crying it, we're just listening with blinders on (that's what our opinions make us believe).
They CHOOSE to be frugal and not overpay. Albert Belle and Bobby Bonilla are still being paid to this day and they haven't stepped on a field in years. Why? Because teams made the mistake of overpaying.
Many people then - and certainly many more now - knew/know that those teams were overpaying then, but they paid anyways.
I'm all for the model of operations the A's and Twinkies handle their business. I root for them for just that reason.
