He can legally change his name to whatever he wants, but the adoption of a different last name on his case will be somewhat more difficult but doable.
There are several requirements to meet for a surname change...
Some people do it for artistic reasons, others for family adoption and so on...
In his case, you say he would keep his first surname (father's) and adopt yours instead of his maternal surname. I don't see why not! Contact a lawyer to follow the right guidelines to get this surname change approval without problems!
