I know of a similar case. It is that of an outstanding Dominican scientist-corporate man who married an American woman. The Dominican adopted his wife's name and created a hyphenated last name. His last name was a very common Dominican last name, and by adding hers, he had a unique last name. They lived in the DR for many years and then he was hired by a major US corporation and they went to live in the USA. So, from his experience, would concur with Pichardo that it is doable.
