Not so much a 4WD as any sturdy vehicle with good shock absorbers that is not too low-slung - you can probably even do it in a normal car but with great discomfort for both car and passengers.
Some people even made it to Playa Rincón in small hire cars, we were in a minivan that did OK, but a high jeep/SUV/pickup is the ideal choice.
