PAN AM CONECTARA NEWARK CON TRES CIUDADES EN RD

MIAMI (EEUU), (EFE).- Pan American Airways anunció, en Miami, que comenzará a ofrecer servicio entre el aeropuerto internacional de Newark, en Nueva Jersey, y los de Puerto Plata, Punta Cana y Santiago, en República Dominicana.
Los vuelos se iniciarán el 28 de junio del 2002, pero están a la venta inmediatamente.
Dave Fink, presidente de Pan Am, dijo que "la expansión del servicio a la República Dominicana es un suceso significativo para la aerolínea y esperamos que esto contribuya en gran manera a la infraestructura de transporte de ese país".
El ejecutivo agregó que "durante los años iniciales de la aviación, Pan Am fue la primera aerolínea en ofrecer viajes de negocios y placer en el Caribe y Sudamérica. Renovar este compromiso con esta región es un hecho histórico y significativo para nosotros".
Las nuevas rutas se inscriben en el marco de los planes de expansión de la compañía para el Caribe, que comenzaron el 30 de mayo con vuelos entre Puerto Plata (República Dominicana), San Juan (Puerto Rico) y Miami.
Las rutas de Pan Am entre Newark y Puerto Plata, Punta Cana y Santiago utilizarán aviones Boeing 727-200.
Pan American, considerada una leyenda de la aviación comercial estadounidense, volvió a los cielos en 1996, ofreciendo vuelos nacionales y de bajo costo, tras una ausencia de cinco años provocada por una crisis financiera.
El primer vuelo fue entre Nueva York y Miami, cuyo aeropuerto fue conocido como el "campo de Pan Am", base original de operaciones de la aerolínea en 1928.
Tras una serie de contratiempos que incluía la tragedia del vuelo 103 que estalló sobre Lockerbie, Escocia en 1988, la compañía tuvo que recurrir a la bancarrota en enero de 1991. Más tarde en ese año, se vio obligada a cancelar por completo sus operaciones.

La aerolínea comercial, la primera que operó en la nación, realizó los primeros vuelos transatlánticos y transpacíficos.
En tope de sus operaciones, en los años 60, Pan Am contaba con un personal de unos 44.000 empleados que volaba centenares de vuelos diarios a casi todo el mundo.
El vuelo inaugural de Pan American fue de Miami a La Habana en 1927.

Pan American Airways to Connect Newark With Three Dominican Cities
Newark to Puerto Plata, Punta Cana & Santiago will begin on June 28th
PORTSMOUTH, N.H., June 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Pan American Airways announced today that it will begin service between Newark International Airport and Puerto Plata, Punta Cana and Santiago in the Dominican Republic. The flights will begin on June 28, 2002, but are for sale immediately.

Pan Am's expansion comes on the heels of the airline's successful launch of service between Puerto Plata, San Juan and Miami on May 30th.
