Thumbs down JET 24

Out of nowhere, JET 24 started summer operations. In 1985, it started to offer scheduled-non stop flights from SJU to MAD. Prices were extremely competitive with those offered by IB and AV. I was 7 years old and my brother was 5.

The equipment used was a DC-10-40 leased from Northwest Orient (now NWA). Schedule time was around 2100 but it arrived into SJU from MIA around 0100. It had a dual class configuration and it was flown full. One hour before sunrise, we were told MAD has not granted landing permit (due to unpaid landing fees from previous flights) and we were going to divert to LIS. We stayed in LIS for about 3 hours without being able to get out of the aircraft. At 1000, we took off from LIS to MAD.

On my return from MAD to SJU, JET24 just dissapeared from service and we were at least 1,000 passengers in MAD stranded from previous flights. It was August and all airlines were full or oversold. It took us three days to get out of MAD on a non-stop flight to MIA via IB. At MIA, we again got stranded as our connection flight to SJU was already gone (Arrow DC-8). Next day, we were onboard an EA L-1011 to SJU.

What a summer vacation! Too much action!!

TRSboy, that expirience really scares.

I always tried to use well known airlines in my life, so I manged to avoid these situations. I don't use discounted cheap carriers, so I don;t have reasons to compain. My major delays were like 6-7 hours, one day TWA bumped me from their overbooked flight, so I had to fly next day, but I didn't want to fly on that day anyway, so it was ok for me.
I've seen some horrible airline within Russia, it was beyond imaginable ways When APA Dominicana was flying I tried to use it, so I reserved RT to NYC and here it comes, my desire to support national carriers had died at once. A300 they had was in very bad conditions, service was extremely terrible, it looked like guagua service between SDQ and somewhere else. It was bad!
Certainly many carriers provide very bad service, only few are excellent, in according to statistics Singapore Airlines is the best now, Cathay Pacific, British Airways and JAL follow them. In my opinion in USA Continental now is the best. Delta became terrible now, it looks like NW

So as far as I remember my worst flight was with APA. I don't count charter flight HEX-PLS on Caribair, since it was not regular scheduled flight I won't talk about, after I used that I am wondering how are we still alive?

I once took an internal Russian flight, Moscow to Stavropol.

No boarding cards, sit in any seat you want, just not on the broken ones.
They did the standard safety, just a few lines, the funniest being, "when we are taking off, please sit down". The stewardess knew I didn't speak Russian, so made an effort to explain the safety features of the aircraft in English. All that did was get me more scared!

When the pilot decided to put his foot on the gas for take off, three drunk guys sitting at the back of the plane decided to "air surf" in the isle. Kind of a competition to see who could keep standing up on take off, they all ended up in a heap
The stewardess couldn't careless, she was more concerned with practicing her English.

Our decent was more like a free fall! I'm sure the pilot was trying to scare the drunk guys. It didn't work, they were passed out at the back of the plane, I wished I was one of them. What made the landing more fun was the freezing conditions, sliding to a stop is not my idea of welcome to Stavropol!

I have no idea what type of aircraft it was, but it wasn't very happy flying.

I know a guy who found himself in the bathroom during turbulence. The toilet somehow came disconnected from the floor and when he finally got out, he was covered in the same blue water that was running up the aisle during the descent and landing.
I guess you had to be there. It was hilarious listening to the unabridged version.

Robert, I used to fly in Russia. I've made many flights Moscow-Sochi. During the 90es it was really bad, now when I went there in 2002 it was completely different. Good meals, clean planes, everything changed there, look how the airport looks in Moscow now : http://www.eastline.ru/aero/photogallery.asp
