CNN.com reports the Pentagon has authorized a Stage One activation of the Civilian Reserve Air Fleet to allow the military to move troops and equipment in support of the Persian Gulf buildup. In simple terms it means the government can make use of the civilian aircraft of companies with whom it has peacetime incentive contracts (I pat you on the back, now its time for you to pat me on the back). It involves 22 US companies and 78 commercial aircraft.
How does this affect the D.R.? Do not know as of yet. Most probably it will be barely a dent. However, it means there will be less aircraft flying in the commercial pool, meaning there will be fewer incentives for the airlines to offer lower fares and there will be flight cutbacks. Should anyone (especially those waiting for last minute fare savers) have a future desire for a trip to the D.R. they may want to think about when they want to book, flight availability, and how much they will paying for air transport.
