from my recent experience (as of a week ago)..duty free liquids were being confiscated in Miami and San Juan...so if you're lucky to get it out of the DR and other countries, you WILL get caught at US Customs....

I read on the AA website that absolutely NO banned items will be allowed into the terminal areas( after the x-ray machines) or on board the plane...I called and they said anything bought in the duty free shop is subject to the same restrictions....but when i got through the final screening point at JFK and walked through the duty free shop only 50 feet from the gate.. many people were buying the huge bottles of scotch and other alcohol.....so i asked the lady there and she said , anything bought there would be allowed on the plane, but you would have to let them bring it to an area RIGHT before you enter the plane....where they usually gave out the big stuff people bought at duty free....so i bought some cologne... they put in a bag with my reciept, and sure enough they gave it back to me right before I got on the plane and it was allowed along with 20, 3 foot tall boxes of chivas regal and johnny walker blue(no not mine.)!!!!!!!!!!!!! so the information from AA wasnt being inforced.
When leaving STI , coming back... they had 6 women doing FINAL carry on bag checks right in front of the jet bridge!!!!!! no place to give away your banned items there... they keep the stuff they find.... they did a pretty in depth check of my carry on thats for sure, going deep into the toiletry bag iteslf inside my carry on......then after she checked everything , she asks..."no toothpaste?".....Its in the check bags honey........

lots of unhappy campers in that area!!!!!!!!

maybe some of them were going back to the US for the first time since the incident in London.... and hadnt heard of the new rules....

I got the impression they would have confiscated any liquid , even if it was bought at the STI duty free shop.......

There is NO problem purchasing Rum in DUTY FREE and carrying it on in POP,SDQ, STI etc....if you connect through a US airport it will be confiscated passing through security on your next flight.

If you have a direct flight then NO PROBLEM with Duty Free booze.

Default duty free

I came back to the states on jan 16 from pop after checking my bags outside at the counter i went thru security and into the shops area where i bought 1 bottle of rum to bring back in the duty free area in the bag recipt staples all of that.well when i got to miami they said i was outside of security because you have to go thru customs and then reenter the security area well they took the bottle in the bag with recipt and staples on it.I was told it should have been in my checked bag but i couldent get to my bag until later in the process so dont buy anything you cant put into your checked bag.it might depend on who is on thug control at the time you go thru but be aware that they have the last word on what you can or cannot have!!!!
