I say you are still lucky, if you fly from Australia to Europe or Asia (or the other way around), then you get only one bag and it can be only 20 kg (not even 40 lb), and they charge you lots and lots of $ for any extra kilo (not just 20 bucks). And the hand luggage can be only 5 kg. When I was flying form South America to Australia and back, it would be cheaper to fly through USA, just because of the extra kilos you could carry (and I always had 2 x 64 lb and some). If I would fly direct, it would be much more expensive due to the overweight charges.

I was just wondering, I will have to fly to Australia, and it is SD - Miami - LA - Melbourne flight. Will I have to pay for the Miami - LA bit?

Wow, from South America to Australia thru the US !! Why not from Chile to Australia - that would have been better and less travel time !

If you don't make a stopover at any US city, you won't pay the extra charge. This is for domestic portions, not connecting flights !
