Now that we are on this topic...Whatever happened to the runway expansion at STI? Wasn't there something going on? I heard they had even purchased the land.

Default Seems unlikely

With loss of traffic I'd be surprised if they spent money to expand. Have not heard about the land, etc.

If they want to have Europeans airlines landing at STI, they need to expand, it doesn't matter if they loose traffic coming from the STATES.

Remember Europeans airlines like to use B757, B777-300ER and A340 and many had ordered the A380, so STI administrators need to expand the runway to get European traffic.

No expansion for now....... MDST is getting a lot less revenue 3rd and 4th quarter of '08, so no more money spending period.........

Default Europeans

And Europeans generally don't want to fly to STI, they want to go to the beaches or SDQ. STI has been structured around ethnic traffic from the US from day 1.

Default STI runway

Nice pictures of that 747!

Santiago's runway 11/29 is 8596' long 148' wide.
A 747 needs about 7000ft of runway length to land.
Of course that distance can be affected by weight, temperature and elevation among other factors.

Saint Maarten/Martin's Princess Juliana airport has a 7000ft runway and yet sunbathers see 747's and A340 flying in right over their heads. (runway elevation 13ft amsl so this might help)
The KLM 747's land there from Amsterdam but then take off for Curacao or Aruba where they refuel for flight back.
