The Federal Aviation Administration proposed $9.2 million in civil penalties against United Airlines and US Airways for operating planes that were not in compliance with their own maintenance procedures or federal airworthiness directives, Reuters reported.
United Airlines faces a $3.8 million fine for operating a Boeing 737 on more than 200 flights with two towels, instead of protective caps, covering an oil sump compartment inside one of the 737's two engines. The towels apparently had been in place since the previous December, the article said.
The FAA is proposing a $5.4 million fine against US Airways for operating eight aircraft on 1,647 flights from October 2008 through January of this year while the planes were out of compliance, the article said. US Airways said the penalty dates to challenges resulting from the integration of maintenance systems in 2007 after the 2005 merger with America West.
Both airlines have 30 days to respond to the FAA.
