Default Best budget Italian food in Santo Domingo

Name: Peppino’s
Location: Roberto Pastoriza No. 313 Tel: 540-4600
Reason why?: Hip, cheap and friendly serivce, but most important of all, the food is tasty.

This restaurant has been jam-packed since word got out on El Caribe’s Bureo. No wonder. Not a single dish sells over RD$200. But each dish is tastefullly arranged, presented and service is quick and surprisingly pleasant. The food is Argentine version of simple but flavorful Italian food. Some typical Argentine desserts (dulce de leche) are worth trying. Expect horrendous waits if you go on a Sat or Sun. Better go on week days. There is plenty of parking.

A close second:

Capuccino
Av. Máximo Gómez No. 60 (right across from Teatro Nacional, entrance facing the gas station)

Tel: 689-8600

The price range is slightly higher (RD$200-400) but the selection is much wider and the clientele is predominatly European, especially Italians. Open late too. Make sure to go into the more informal part (cafe+ front dining area) instead of the more stuffy restaurant proper (a differnt door a few steps away, where the menu is much pricier). Food is no-nonsense typical Italian fare, with strength in fresh pasta. This is a specially good place to eat pre- or post- performance as the food arrives fast. They also have a large selection of dessert and home-made ice cream. In short, a tiny slice of Italy tucked away in busy city centre.
