Sosua by the Sea is an AI. Alis Surf Camp is out of the way and a little run down. But they have a very good German restaurant there.
Of all the hotels mentioned the Valero is the best.
Another place you might like is Piergiorgio in Sosua. Beautiful view, quiet, about $120 a night. If you stay there though I have to warn you not to eat in the restaurant, average food at exhorbitant prices. They have another restaurant run by a German. He serves mostly Pizza and Pasta. That one is OK.
Another thing on this thread. I noticed both posts recommending Sosua by the Sea, were made by two different individual first time posters. ?????????? I would disregard those posts.

I have to recommend Miramar in Castillo. 1000rd day, large pool, incrdible view of Bhia Isabella, fantastic Taino acheology and caves, and the best Belgian hosts and fantastic food. Ten rooms, European standards and quiet. Really a wonderrful out of the way spot. Close to the Americas first church and settlement. Just west of Luperon.

A few good choices for mid-price non AI in Cabarete, less expensive than Villa Taina.
Hotel Alegria (East Side Cabarete Bay -- rooms and studios, some ocean view, 30 meters from beach)
Wilson's Beach House (East Side Cabarete Bay -- ocean fronts, shared kitchen)
Hotel Casablanca (East Cabarete, about 100 meters from beach -- non-swimming area)
Check their reviews on tripadvisor.com.

The Velero is the best non AI in Cabarete. Never heard any complaints. I've seen the reviews on tripadvisor.com. It's the No. 1 recommended hotel in Cabarete. I don't think that you will be dissapointed. Check the reviews on tripadvisor.

I've only been to the restaurant; food is pretty good. At to their accmmodations, they looked run down and I've heard from people staying there that they're very basic like many rooms share a common bathroom. It's very popular with the surfers. It's also pretty far away from the beach. In the same area, you have Residencia Dominicana. They're really close to the Cabarete Surf Camp and I've heard that even though the accommodations are quite basic, they're pretty good value for the price. If you'd rather stay closer to town and the beach, you can find affordable prices at Casa Blanca, Hotel Alegria, Wilson's Beach House or on the other side of town, the Extreme Hotel is getting very good reviews from kite surfers. Again, basic accommodations but kiters seem quite happy there. My recommendation: take a look at alternatives at tripadvisor.com, read reviews, then post here again if you do choose another place to stay.

I was in Alis Surf Camp also known as Cabarete Surf Camp, 3 weeks in a small studio, and the owner tried to scam me, I paid 2 weeks and he did the trick "oh I don't have bills now", when I was leaving a week later he tried to get another 2 weeks paid, sad experience for my first visit to cabarete!
martin11220 : Velero Beach Resort; Dominican Republic Luxury Vacation Resort Hotel & Condo Rentals , BTW it has no beach! just reefs, you must walk to cabarete beach , little nuisance you cannot go directly from the hammock to water
