I started reading Jaime Bayly's novels by recommendation of some Peruvian friends. They themselves are not loyal fans of his work but I guess to show their patriotism when speaking of literature they would always say to me- tienes que probar algo de Bayly. Escribe muy bien. Well, when it comes to Spanish literature I am easily sold. The first book I read was No se lo digas a nadie. If you have not guessed it by now language is something that fascinates me. I have an insatiable thirst to strengthen and broaden my horizons when it comes to language. I am often asked by English and Spanish speakers 'what's your first language?' My response now depends on my mood. I guess I can take it as a compliment that the person is not sure. It shows absolute fluency, good communication skills, strong vocab etc. in both languages. However, my question is 'why does it matter?'

La lectura y los dominicanos

Reading is essential if one wishes to grow intellectually and spiritually. During our formative years in school we are not given the option to read books of our choice. Our academic curriculum is chosen for us. However, outside of the classroom we can read books of preference to further enhance our intellectual growth. As adults are choices become infinite, endless. There is no excuse to not read.

Some of the benefits of reading at a young age include oral competency and fluency...
