Los sin papeles y sus derechos

What are the rights of illegal immigrants? This is a controversial global topic that's difficult to address. Some countries face the difficulty of this problem more than others due to their location and facility to reach. However, the problem has reached epidemic proportions in some countries like the USA, Spain, Italy and the Dominican Republic just to name a few. Spain in particular has a chronic problem on its hands with illegal immigrants from Africa's coastal and western countries who arrive in dilapidated boats and in extremely poor health. In many cases the number of persons in each crossing is over one hundred which include adults and children.

Leaving personal prejudices aside, what are the rights of these individuals in a foreign land? Should they be automatically repatriated or do they now become the responsibility of a foreign government? How do these illegal immigrants impact the lives of the citizens of their new land? Specific to Spain's situation, I can't understand why the Spanish government has to deal with the problem in a compassionate way given the number of Africans who attempt to cross daily and reach the coast of Spain and Tenerife Islands. The number is astonishing and simply can't be dismissed as a factor that will not have a social and economic impact on Spain.

I am not sure I or many can really understand what drives people to take such drastic measures to leave their country of origin needless to say many African countries are extremely poor. Yes, many are looking for a way out, better opportunities, a chance to improve however, being illegal in any country comes with a huge price tag- discrimination, poverty, and always being vigilant of being pursued by immigration.

When I read articles like the one in the link, I sympathize with the feeling of desperation of the people however, their government needs to take ownership of their actions. The African countries that these people come from are some of the Maghreb ones and countries south of the Sahara.
