Jaime Bayly- Peruvian, author and columnist

I started reading Jaime Bayly's novels by recommendation of some Peruvian friends. They themselves are not loyal fans of his work but I guess to show their patriotism when speaking of literature they would always say to me- tienes que probar algo de Bayly. Escribe muy bien. Well, when it comes to Spanish literature I am easily sold. The first book I read was No se lo digas a nadie. Quite controversial in the sense that Jaime B dared to touch the theme of homosexuality which is quite a controversial topic in Latin American culture. After reading No se lo digas... I was intrigued. Apart from his strong language and vocabulary, Jaime is potentially a good writer. Having read most of his books in years to follow my favorite novels are Fue ayer y no me acuerdo, La mujer de mi hermano and El huracán lleva tu nombre.

As a columnist Bayly just writes about anything and everything. He comes across as quite narcissistic especially if you are not used to his style. I read his commentary primarily for his usage of the Spanish language and the every now then really provocative topic. Whether ones like Bayly or not, he is well-educated and this is evident once you read his writings. His column is posted weekly in the Miami paper el Nuevo Herald or you can read his column in the Peruvian paper Correo along with the writings of other columnists. Depending on your keenness of the Spanish language, what I like about Bayly is he expresses himself like a Peruvian. His phraseology, expressions and vocabulary are a reflection of the Peruvian vernacular speech.

As an author Bayly has not written much lately. As they say "ha bajado mucho". Luckily, other literary compatriots like Santiago Roncagliolo have filled the gap.

I just read the most recent entry- Esta guerra recién comienza. He's a good writer IMO. Daring and provocative.
