In light of the recent summit of the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago this past weekend- April 17-18, I think this book may have renewed interest or popularity among readers who are interested in reading books of socio-political content. It was brought to my attention in a thread about summer reading in 2007, however there was no feedback provided by the poster. At the time, I did read a few editorial summaries about the author and the content of the book and I added it to my long list of books to read. Now that it may become the focus of controversy since it was given to Obama as a gift by Hugo Chávez, I feel the need to read this book sooner than later.

Chávez, a huge critique of the US and a vibrant leader of leftist Latin governments today gave the book to Obama as a gift. Is this insult or irony? I say this because Obama does not speak Spanish and because I have yet to read the book until then I will not know the intended message.

I will order a copy from Amazon today while it's available and figure how to free up some reading time because I am sure it will help to improve my understanding of Latin American relations with the US while taking in stride the critique/ opinion of the author and its followers.
