Dominican identity, pelo malo and negrofobia

Posted 08-08-2009 at 02:28 PM by Marianopolita (Life's Potpourri)

Here is a good and poignant article on Dominican identity, pelo malo and negrofobia. Deeply rooted in the culture and inculcated in the minds of the majority of Dominicans which perpetuates the colonist dogma and anti-haitianismo. To deny or put yet another spin on the reality is another blow to the already existing notion of a society that's 'acomplejada with a clear falta de identidad'. I also think it's interesting to note that it is posted in a Dominican newspaper, Clave Digital.

Money is a temporary solution but not the long term panacea for Haiti

These two recent articles in BBC Mundo address the crisis in Haiti. Since 2004 aid from world organizations such as the UN have been sent to help slow down its economic demise and invert money into rebuilding its infrastructure. However, little results or progress have been seen. Although the current government is committed to spending the money 'wisely' and dedicating funds to key areas in order to help rebuild the country, Haiti continues to sink further in economic chaos, desperation and poverty....

No question about it we are living in an age of change and challenge. Long standing political regimes are redefining their ideology or way of thinking, we are in a global recession, several countries are sinking deeper into extreme poverty, and crime in Latin America once again has risen and is out of control in some countries for e.g. Mexico, Guatemala and Colombia. Several Latin America countries have shortage of water problems and piracy in the high seas is now like a new found crime again just...

Not just an immigrant but fears for his life because of a ritual...

Posted 04-09-2009 at 12:03 PM by Marianopolita (Life's Potpourri)

I think the African continent remains a mystery to many in terms of its history, culture, customs, rituals etc, in spite of the wealth of information that many of us have at our disposal. In comparison to Europe, the Americas and Asia, this continent seems to get the short end of the stick and often only portrayed in a negative light.

In my experience, Africa is referred to by many as a country when it's a continent with over fifty countries. The diversity of language, culture, food,...

'I am getting on that boat come hell or high water'- Naufragan cientos de inmigrantes

Posted 03-31-2009 at 06:04 PM by Marianopolita (Life's Potpourri)

'I am getting on that boat come hell or high water'; this is what I imagine to be the mindset of many of these Africans who pay thousands of dollars to traffickers to leave their country of origin hoping to reach the coast of Europe- Malta, Spain or Italy. Well, it’s high season officially starting in April and I believe we will see many more of these sad reports of the lives lost in the Mediterranean Sea at the expense of human trafficking.

Africa is a continent with many poor countries...
