Dominican People and Credit Cards
Hi,
im from the center of santo domingo and in my 23 years i have seen how we are so wrong about using credit cards. we believe credit cards doesnt help you, we say a problem. This because most of the credit cards used by us are direcly related to personal shopping. Domincan people still dont know the power of internet and also we are stock because of the news media. Our culture its not prepare yet to use credit cards, that's what i think. for example, when i do bussiness here, and i ask my clients to pay with a DEPOSIT on my account. they dont even trust on that. they say there is no guaranties on that method.. and i said... the bank will give you aboucher that its exactly the same as a check confirmation. Now. imaging, people thats in the 21th century don know how to make remote payments will start using credit cards.
in adition to this you have to mantion thats to get a credit card your CICLA ( www.cicla.com.do) report has to be clean and in the most of the time people ignore the existence of this oraganitation.
what do you think?

The vast majority of Dominicans can't handle money!
They live on "Credit"! From the "Colmado",their family, the "Prestamista' (Loan Shark"),the"Pawn Shop",co-workers,and "friends",to name just a few!
They are always "broke" the day after "payday" ,and start the same cycle all over again! They apply for as many credit cards as they can, then "max" them out,and never pay them back!
Forget about using a personal check here!Nobody will take a chance!
Never under any circumstances, loan money to any Dominican. You will never get it back!!
Better they be angry with you for 15 minutes because you say "NO!",than lose a friendship over non-payment of a loan! They really mean "GIFT"when they say "Loan"!

Oh is that who is to blame? Let me explain something to you, if you charge something, make sure you have the money to pay for it when the bill comes in. If you charge something and DO NOT have the money to pay for it, you cannot afford it and will fall into debt. Was your culture supposed to prepare you for that? Ever hear of the term accountability?

Yes larry i know the term. thats what im trying to say .... the public income of an employee is less than RD$ 4,000.00 (US$100.00 where US$1.00 = RD$40.00) imagine a country where you earn less than RD$ bucks a day and when you go to buy aeven a breath it will cost you RD$3.00 compare that price if you have to buy it for a family with 6 members. if you use your credit card you will be on troubles.

I won't be surprised if Credit Card issuers (the smart ones that is) soon start asking dominicans to show proof of a job and some property that is worth more than their credit line. That way, they don't pay, the bank take their property as collateral, sell the prop., keep the principal + interest owed to them, and return to the dominican whatever is left. This of course is theoretically thinking. We all know that a bank (dominican or not) will not give back what doesn't belong to them. Especially in the free capitalistic system of the republic.

Sorry but I misread your quote to mean " our culture has not prepared us to use credit cards". I took this as another example of fingerpointing. Thats why I mentioned accountability. Sorry about that.

1.- Credit Card interest its terribly high 6% and 7% monthly (84% annualy)
2.- Some DR banks give credit cards to EVERYONE
3.- Some DR banks give too much credit limit
4.- People here dont unterstand (nobody explain that) that the credit on a CC is not a LOAN its a credit for a short period of time
5.- In this society we need a CC, you need one for: rent a car, have a cell phone, use for credi reference, buy on the internet, buy by phone (sometimes), etc...
6.- We need to educate the people about what is and how use a credit card.
thanks
