Default We bring ours down from the states......

......we regularly purchase hospital take-outs and bring them down for our operational use. These are lower cost, well maintained till taken out of service, open or sound attenuated systems. Can't think you would want less than 150 KW continuous , sound attenuated....make sure you get a brand name (ie Cummins or Cat....way easier to find parts for the times they are "down").

Suerte, Dave

If you buy one down in the DR....purchase it NEW....regular maintenance for used "plantas" here tends to be non -existent.

Thanks Dave for your reply.

Hope you don't mind me asking.. where would you find out about hospital take-outs?

What would be the price range for a used one versus a new one?

Thanks,
Lucy

Just to help NYC girl along, what has been the U.S. domestic transportation, export, shipping, import costs for one of these 150 kw units and from what origin port?

The reason I ask this is some people assume they are getting the benefit of buying cheap in the States or elsewhere and then do not do the research to factor in how much it is going to cost them to transport to the D.R. Yet, it may be advantageous to buy new in the D.R. because of a lower bottom line when you do not have to factor in foreign transport and export/import costs. Regards, PJT

Using a 150 KW enclosed, sound attenuated set as an example of size, you can often send them LTL for transport to the port (cheaper transport). For our containers, we typically use Houston, NY, and Savannah Ports. However, for a "consolidation" type load (where just one or a few heavy items are being sent) we use Miami. Therefore, for the sake of oversimpification, determine your point of origin on item purchased, add the miles between that point and Miami and multiply by 1 dollar (we will call that the "budget # you should not exceed). There will likely be a 100-150 buck minimum for transport if you were within a 30 mile radius of the port destination.

Ocean freight (miami consolidation) charges us about 350 bucks to ship items like this down down. This includes price for Export/legalization/consular docs.

Import costs are....... "Look at Pibs posts on this topic". I have nothing to add from what has been placed in that post. However, for this exercise, you should be able to see this size unit pay no more than 2,000 dollars.

If you are buying larger sets 80 KW up, you ALWAYS want to buy in the states and bring them down since the maintenance on units (at least the ones we purchase) place the generator still in a "like new" mode with low hours and STRONG maintenance.

YOU MUST KEEP IT IN YOU HEAD that large gen sets that you buy here in the DR are typically NEVER properly maintained (that is your rule of thumb). So if you buy a large set here buy it with that perspective in mind (unless of course you actually know the people and the plant/maintenance schedule of what you are buying here...OR you are Rob which, as a little known fact, is ALSO a master diesel mechanic and can build a 1000KW Gen set in his sleep...haha).

Smaller diesel sets....thats the "grey" area because you start getting into "Pacific Rim" brands that are imported new and which will run well for their initial time frames. These you can def. buy new down here and be close enough price and quality wise not to waste your time in importing one (unless of course you are bringing down a full container and then it is always the way to go). We typically view these sizes as "throw away" sets...since once they need a rebuild you almost may as well go buy another new one.

Default FYI

DMS: Your buddy in jacksonville hasn't come up with anything and the one in Miami only offered new gen sets, grrrr!

Locally there is a Perkins 30 kw set for about 6,000 US$ in Santo Domingo with about 1100 hours on it. I know the guy! Price is a little more that I want to pay. But he said that there were people from Cabarete that were going to see it today.

Amaro Motors (Cucho Amaro, Prop.) has used, like new, Denyo gen sets starting at $8,000US for 37 kw.

There is a John Deere with 9000 hours that we turned down, for RD$140K, on the Charles De Gaulle. Guy named Castillo.

Still hurtin' and still looking!

Default HB....the price on the Perkins in the DR is "good"........

....time you pay 3500-4000 up in the states to begin with....especially when you know the guy. SCA folks deal with much larger sets but are always reliable on quality when they "find" the set. Smallest I have ever purchased from them is a 60 KW LP and a 100 KW diesel.

I will call you today (fri.) and tell you pricing on a couple that were offered to me recently.

Best, Dave
