The closest is the Matum. Used to be bad but I have heard many upgrades and renovations were done.

Matum is within walking distance and you can see the monument from the hotel, 4 star no. Gran Amirante is probably what your looking for, five mins from Monument by car.

Platino>? Not that far, if you have good shoes. You can see the Monument from there. Nice, secluded setting.
Ave Estrella Sadhala....

I have stayed at Hotel Matum since the renovations and will be staying there in the future. Maybe not a 4 Star, but very nice. The rooms and baths are updated. The rooms I have stayed in, the baths were completely remodeled. Not just a cheap make over but new everything - tile, fixtures, etc.

You can even ask for a room overlooking the park.

Hodelpa Centro Plaza. Hodelpa Centro Plaza- Hotel Cásico en Santiago le ofrece hospedaje, acomodaciones, en el centro de la ciudad, Hotel Santiago, hoteles Santiago, hotel en santiago, hoteles en santiago, República Dominicana! is probablyright for you. It's just a few blocks from the monument and it's nice. Hodelpa Gran Almirante is nicer but you'll be taking taxis. Centro Plaza had sort of a boutique hotel feel to it. It was around $100 as I recall?

On the cheap I've stayed in the Aloha Sol several times and it's....ok. The price is right, security is fine and am adequate breakfast is included, but the rooms are dated and I had a couple issues (One room had a strong sewer gas smell coming from the toilet. One time the remote control didn't work and I spent an hour with 4 guys in my room trying to fix it instead of just giving me a different room. et al) but nothing major. I'm a repeat customer.

I'm actually in Santiago right now and looking for something in the same price range as Aloha Sol but a little nicer and am going to check out Platino. If that doesn't work out I'll try Matun. Either way I'll report back.

My experience as well. We stayed there right after renovations, maybe 1.5 years ago. But the front desk seemed confused and unorganized, and they really didn't seem to have a functioning restaurant. It took an act of Congress to get coffee in the morning. Has that improved? I keep seeing the little cafe to the right is constantly changing names. Puzzles me, because one would think that would be a great location.
