Right on. I was amazed to see them make solid contact on something less than a half inch in thickness, with a round stick barely an inch in thickness - and hit it consistently and hard.
I used to save up a handful of those pucks, and on my bikerides I'd just find kids to give them too. On my way back, I'd stop and watch. Further, they didn't give me much notice, barely a thank you. Their excitement for the pucks was all focused on the game, they really didn't notice me.
I'm unsure of what to recommend, but I'm sure a driver could make things a bit easier. Renting a car would mean you'd have to drive it. I'd recommend a honeymoon in Baghdad before I'd encourage driving in the DR.

how much would it cost to hire somebody to drive us (my wife's 5 months pregnant so maybe we should forget about it and lay by the pool?) from puerto plata to the capitol for the day? or maybe santiago, but i would love to visit the red sox baseball academy in SD

i'm sure it would be appreciated but for us tourists Customs is an issue. gloves and balls are cool for carry luggage on but bats need to be out in your stored luggage. i only say this because i had some baseball items taken from my stored luggage (airport unnamed).
or simply buy some items in the DR and take them to any ball field....

Santiago maybe.
SD, no no no!
Lay by the pool.
The World Champion's academy is in El Toro, another 40 minutes east of SD. I can almost assure you that will be a disappointment. It's not a tourist facility at all. I went to the opening back in 03 and it's more of a baseball factory than a baseball facility.
Perhaps things have changed, but this is not a tourist sector at all. Email me and I can send you pictures of it (you can tell your friends you took the shots).
There should be ample opportunity to find some ball in PP vs. the rigors of driving across that pile of coral.

I was kidding
Cleef buddy - I was kidding. I thought the word "snicker" would tip everyone off.
I have driven in and around San Pedro for 11 years, but did my first "real" driving in Santo Domingo last June. Driving on John F. Kennedy, Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, etc - WOW!. All I can say is that I certainly enjoyed my Presidente afterwards. The taxi drivers in SDO make their counterparts in NYC look like rookies!

Do you mean you couldn't enjoy the Presidente while driving?
That was my only favorite part of driving - the drive-thru at "Drinks to Go".
Is that place still going strong? On Churchill?
What a country!!

thanks for the help cleef. it is good advice. i will stay by the pool and look for some baseball locally. i wouldn't mind driving myself - i like a little adventure - but with my wife along, we are better off just relaxing where we are staying.
