Wink All the power to them.

I don't think we can sit back and criticize small market teams for "crying broke" because they aren't crying it, we're just listening with blinders on (that's what our opinions make us believe).

They CHOOSE to be frugal and not overpay. Albert Belle and Bobby Bonilla are still being paid to this day and they haven't stepped on a field in years. Why? Because teams made the mistake of overpaying.

Many people then - and certainly many more now - knew/know that those teams were overpaying then, but they paid anyways.

I'm all for the model of operations the A's and Twinkies handle their business. I root for them for just that reason.

As my decrepit old man used to say "hunger is good motivation."

That article brings up a very good question, if the mlb draft included the DR, would that all but do away with the winter leagues like it did in the PR?

How is it that PR's inclusion in the draft negatively affected the winter leagues?

I don't know, but the article that was posted seemed to think it was the cause of the demise of the PR league.

That's the only information I've seen on the subject too. I don't agree with the writer's premise. The conclusions he came to seemed forced.

It would seem to me, MLB would want those leagues to stay in tact. Didn't they dump a bunch of money into the stadium when Montreal/Wash was playing there?

I'm sure they don't want to see the winter leagues fall apart.

I think it maybe due to the dynamic that when these kids are drafted they immediately negotiate a contrat subject to the mlb policies (salary cap) and then enter the farm system. Therefore, there are less players to support the winter leagues. Who knows if this is the case, but it is my best guess.

I would think the MLB teams would want their players to support their country and those leagues. That's where I see the writer's premise faulty. The drafted players have to play somewhere, but being an island in of itself - and not that large - it's not surprising they can't support a division, hence, it's eventual petering out.

They should somehow rotate weeks in the DR to play the Dominican teams and keep a smaller league breathing in the PR. Isn't it US dollars in the PR? I guess that doesn't help as much as it used to.
