Well, now it's been reported that Alex Rodriguez needs surgery to remove the cyst and will be out at least 10 weeks.
That means he will not play for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic and will miss a few weeks of the regular season with the Yankees.
The concern is that he could have an avascular necrosis in the ball of the hip joint. That would be terrible and would shorten his career.
Down the line if he needs hip replacement because of this condition he will never be the same.
Floyd Landis, the professional cyclist who needed hip surgery after he won the Tour De France in 2006 and was disqualified for steroid use rode with a bad hip, underwent surgery for it and is now riding professionally again.
But I have no idea how a baseball player would be able to come back from this. The last ball player to attempt a comeback from hip replacement was Bo Jackson and he was a shell of his former self and was forced to retire.
Like him or hate him, Rodriguez doesn't deserve to go out like this. Let's hope it's not that serious. The doctors won't know for sure what condition the hip is in until they go in and see it, as an MRI can tell you only so much.
