Philly Fans love Cleef Lee
Halladay would have been nice, but who knows how he'd hit.
I like the Cliff Lee pickup, and they didn't trade any of the prospects proposed in the Halladay discussions. Seems like a good deal for both teams.
I was in SF last night and listened to the radio broadcast on the way in (I could actually hear a "LETS GO FLYERS" chant - I'm not kidding).
I watched the last 3 innings as well, the Phills look really good.
See you in October!

The Jays were asking too much for Roy Halladay. No one would be stupid enough to gut their farm system for a 32 year-old pitcher who is going to be a free agent next year and is not guaranteed to resign with the team that trades for him.
As for Pedro, I found it amusing that he is supposedly looking to get revenge against the Mets for not resigning him.
If this is true, it's obvious he's been hit by too many mangoes while sitting under that tree in the DR as a youth.
Besides, the guy's arm is shot. He struggles to get to the high 80's and as a starting pitcher, he is useless after five innings, six if you're lucky.
Good luck with that one, Phillies. It doesn't matter, anyway. Who do they have to beat in their division? The Mets? HAHAHA!!!!!!!!!

I disagree, on the greater point.

Halladay is signed through 2010, so he'd be good for the rest of this season, and all of next.
Further, he could be traded again next year and whatever team ponied up Toronto's asking price would have been able - most likely - to recoup what they lost in their farm system.
If they did not trade him or sign him, as a type A free agent, the team that did sign him would surrender two (very high) draft picks in the 2011 draft.
Although I agree the asking price was high - as it should be, he'd be an ace on every team he went to - it wouldn't necessarily be devastating in the long term.

Gammons mentioned that part of Pedro signing with Philly is to "get back at" the Mets, which I find absurd. What could he have against them? They paid him huge money for little to no production, he brought them nothing but headaches - and he has a vendetta?
That's ludicrous.
His mangoes are tainted.
I'm anxious to see what he does for them. That being said, the Phillies are the best team in baseball at the moment. They look solid.

Yes, I typed too fast on that one. I forgot Halladay had another year remaining on his contract. Looking at it that way maybe a team like the Yanks or the Sox could of traded for him, since they would be in a better position than most to resign a high-priced free agent when his contract is up. And giving up young prospects isn't that big of a deal when you can sign good free agents.
As for the Phillies, I don't think they desperately need Martinez, but having another arm laying around won't hurt them either.

As for the Mets putting up a fight in that division, I don't think so.
Right now I would trade Beltran and Delgado for Dave Kingman and John Milner.

Well, tonight is the night for Pedro and the Phils. I will be home watching. Hopefully, the Phils' bats will come alive and give Pedro a nice lead from the get go! I never listened to him talk much before but I have to admit it is entertaining.

I was hoping he would get some runs support and he sure did - 12 runs!
He threw only 5 innings, gave up 3 runs, only 1 walk (to the pitcher) and 7 hits but showed some promise if he can improve over next 2 months. Pedro's fastball hit 93 so if he can tighten up his command a little, get ahead in the count more, get more comfortable in the stretch I think he can contribute to a repeat for the Phils.

In the first inning the Cubs were - kind of - laying off his pitches, but I think they took a really poor approach to facing Pedro. Too many over-swings.
They should have been far more patient, seen more pitches. He was hanging a lot of off-speed stuff that should have gotten hammered, but they were all swinging for the fences. Soriano was completely psyched out and looked completely lost. Lee had some good swings against him, but he was too anxious to find the bleachers.
The Cubs are for real, but they didn't plan well for this game. Methinks the next team he faces - that will have likely scouted his performance - will be more patient, make him throw more pitches and they'll hit the ripe mangoes he's throwing.
If he gets out of the 4th inning in his next start I'll be surprised. Although, it looks like he's facing the D'Backs next, so not too much of a test there, and the AAA Mets are after that.
When he faces the mettle of the league, he'll get tested.
Cliff Lee was the best pickup they could have made.
The Phillies are the NL favorite - by a wide margin - in my opinion.
