Default Pedro possibly to be picked up by Phillies...

I am a life long Phillies fan am not sure how to feel about the Fighting Phils possibly aquiring Pedro Martinez. As of now the Phillies have great team chemistry but have been struggling this year in the pitching department. Pedro is obvioulsy passed his prime and his ability to stay healthy and effective will be somewhat of a crapshoot.

I am more curious to hear opinions of how Pedro will affect the team chemistry. Any ideas?

I don't think signing Pedro would be a wise move by the Phillies, but, it's not like they're going to beat the Sox in the WS anyway, but for the sake of your question.....

Pedro is nothing more than a 5 inning pitcher at this point. He can't overpower the opponent anymore. The Phil's should make it happen and get Doc Halladay if they wan't to have a chance to win it all.

But more to your question, I don't think he'd help team chemistry, but further, I don't think he'd have much of an effect on it in either direction. The Phil's are the World Champs (that's right Robert - "WORLD") they won before him, he'll be put in his place if he starts with the "sitting under a mango tree" talk.

Highly doubtful they sign him, I think it's a terrible idea.

I didn't think that they would sign him either but according to the Phillies website they liked what they saw and pending a physical they would offer him a deal.

We have taken players (Lidge, Victorino, Ibanez, Moyer, Matt Stairs, etc) who were struggling or passed their prime in the past few years and turned them into cogs in the wheel of a great team so I would hope our scout's saw something promising in Pedro.

As far as the Phillies beating the Red Sox in the World Series - after witnessing last year I believe anything is possible with the Fightin' Phils.

i have always been a fan of Pedro, but now i kind of hate the guy for what he did to the Mets, he was given a ton of money when nobody else would, with this team he was mostly injured or rehabing the whole time he was there. and when he did pitched, he was mediocre at best.
when his contract was up, packed his bags looking for highest contract and not having the decency to even give the Mets a hometown discount.
what a thieft.

as for the op inquiry, i think the Phillies should take him in a heartbeat. at this point Pedro is very very healthy (again thx to the met$$) IMO he is gonna go out there to perform like 2004 Red Sox but 5 inning max.

Phils have the money and fresh memory of the WS.also coupled with the fact that the Phillies, like you said, have the tendency to take over-the-hill players and turn them around.
they should do it.

Adding a 5 inning pitcher doesn't make sense for them right now. Just my opinion, I think they should have gone for Halladay. Any team that wants a winner should.

I'd be really surprised if Pedro makes any impact whatsoever.

Pedro has been one of my favorite players for a lonnnng time, but at this point he needs to retire with some dignity. I don't understand why these players don't realize they can't be great forever and just try to stick around for as long as possible and just embarrass themselves in the end. He already has a pretty good shot at the hall of fame so why mess with it now.

Don't care about the Phillies (They and the Indians are the only two teams I really kind of hate), but I don't think Pedro would be much help to them either as others have mentioned. Maybe he could be a mid-reliever or something like that or maybe he could pull a John Smoltz and become a closer, but Philadelphia already has Lidge whom even though he hasn't been lights out like he was last year is still pretty good.

The Phillies should be going after Halladay even if they sign Pedro, they are really in a bad shape in pitching. About team chemistry, that is really over rated, a team chemistry will always be good if a team is winning and if the team is losing the chemistry is down the toilet, as simple as that. To win you need the best talent out there, and I think Pedro could help against the lesser teams, the only thing that worries me is that bandbox they call Citizens Ball Park, those flies really carry there.

if Pedro gives them 5 inning of low ERA consistently that would be awesome for the phils or any ballclub for that matter.

long gone are the days of complete games pitcher.
pitch count, middle reliever, lefty specialist, and set up man is how todays MLB roll.
