Smile New Work in the U.S. For My Lovely Dominicana?

My beautiful wife to be will be arriving in the US on a K-1 around the Christmas timeframe. Trouble is she needs to work immediately and she is only a beginner in English. She is extremely intelligent, (she just completed her Masters in Business Marketing) and she has learned more English in a year than I've learned Spanish in a lifetime! She currently has a fairly decent job in her Government and I would hate for her to come here and work in a factory until her English comes up to speed. My intention is to enroll her in English courses at the University in the evenings. My family has suggested the department stores (Macy's Bloomingdales etc), but they only pay the minimum wage. Any one have any suggestions with this? Thanks in advance, very much appreciated.

I dont where you are in the us but why dosent she work for the dominicna consulate. I am sure that she wouldnt have a problem, or she can teach spanish at a all language school. Spanish is the second language in the us.
Sorry I am not to familiar with the us cause I live in Canada

Kirk,
I just learned yesterday that ALL of the Dominican Embasseys are short staff, if not unstaffed. Due to the all or nothing DR government approach with the new Administration. Let me know if this turns out to be a good lead for you. Just curious.

If she is beautiful, then she should try the cosmetic counter in the Macy's downtown Brooklyn, NY. If you are in NY of course. There are alot of dominicans working the counters, try it out.
Good Luck!

Hey Captain Kirk...I really wish you two good look with her coming to this country. I advice you to be very supportive because it is not easy leaving a whole stable life behind to start here again. At least you are trying to help her already, that's a good sign.

I think she should try to polish her english and try to convalidate her carrer here so when she goes on interviews they'll see an AMerican college diploma. Maybe she should have to take some classes depending on what school she graduated from in Sto Dgo but not a big deal.

My story didn't end hapily, I am currently in a divorce process and making plans to return to Sto Dgo as soon as I can.

I really wish you good look because it is not a very easy task

Nina, she graduated from the Univ. of Sto Dgo. Supportive? i would do anything for her, as she would do anything for me and she doesn't hide this fact! They just dont make women like this in the U.S. anymore. (Unless the man is a millionaire ofcourse). I am curious Nina, what happened? Did language issues overwhelm your relationship?

As for those of you who answered Thank You!!! My fiance may have a job waiting for her as a technial support specialist. They always need smart people who can deal with their MANY spanish customers! Now if I can only get her here! The visa process IS very SLOW and takes MANY months! We just received our NOA-2 and now its on to Sto Dgo and the long wait. Does anyone know how long the wait is currently? I am hearing 4-6 months because of the backlog.... :-(

Hi Kirk,
I curious to how long it took for your fiancee's visa process. My boyfriend and I are beginning to look at the options. I get so many different views then I saw you posting.....any feedback will be appreciated.

Thanks......

Default Visa Process

Hi,

So far, we have been very lucky. My petition was filed in early September, and I received my NOA-2 for my fiancee a few days ago. We filed through Vermont, which I understand is the fastest. It all depends on where the Petitioner lives in the United States. The real wait begins now when the Petition reaches Santo Domingo. Hopefully it will not take too long. The entire K1 process usually takes between 6 months and 1 year. We have our fingers (and toes) crossed.

Kirk may still have some time on his hands. I brought my now wife over on a K1 about 3 years ago (the process was going on when 911 happened). The first approvals come quickly but then things slow down (at least this was my experience) and you will need to get the politico's involved if you want them to speed up again. I will also tell you that no matter how strong your relationship is now, it will be tested to the max over the next couple of years. It is very difficult for dominican women to get use to the US. They like the shopping and freedom but miss their family and food (nothing found here is the same as it in the DR). Aside from this you will still have to deal with cultural differences you don't even know exist yet. If you love her I'm sure it's worth it but I'm telling you it is not easy and you are in for some unexpected suprises yet - Good luck!
