The environment you just described sounds like you grew up in a low economic area like majority of immigrants from latin america. Unfortunately, your environment was surrounded by un-educated people which happen to be black/afro americans. And criminals usually target people that appear to be foreign to their neighborhood...I'm sure after a couple of beat downs and muggings you just became Asopaotito that we used to harass. Now if you would've migrated to a middle class black neighborhood I'm sure you wouldn't have experience these problems. I never encountered any of these problems when I migrated here.....
Sure, everybody is a richie rich from Port-au-prince like you to move to a nice Middle Class sector in the States. Btw, the neighborhood wasn't that bad, it only happened a couple of times, because I gathered my friends and kicked some arse, but the stealing, drugs, and just uncivility in general was annoying. My family moved out to a much better place once we could afford a better place.

]But what about these spanish speaking immigrants that become a product of that environment you described and starts robbing the new hispanics/black immigrants en el barrio? Unfortunately, a lack of education and broken homes breed criminals...
BS, I am Hispanic, I've seen people smoking weed and listening to that garbage of music. Never got interested in that. This is what Cosby talks about, poverty, un-educated has nothing to do with it. " un-educated ( 2+2=4wise)" doesn't mean "uncivilized". There are two types of education. The one you get with books, like literature, science, mathematics, history, etc. The other education is manners, courtesy, respect . I lived among poor Dominicans in DR that the furthest they've done in school is 2nd grade, and barely read and write. Yet these people have good manners. They greet people, ask for persmission, and simply don't be acting as stupid as the " poor people " you find in Urban or small towns in U.S, most of these Americans even having reached high school levels.

Haven't you noticed that poor people that speak a language with " polite form" like Spanish are generally " better educated"( in the manners sense)? In DR If you see a 6 year old boy addressing an adult guest as " tu" , 8 out of 10 he will be publicly scolded by the " poor, uneducated platano eater" you be refering. What do you hear in U.S ghettos? " what's up yo ! ". Please don't tell me nobody knows what the personal pronoun " you" .

Asopao have you ever asked urself this? Why did I or my parents moved to such a neigborhood? ...
I'm sad that I didn't get to move to Bel-Air like Will Smith did, too bad my Mom doesn't have a rich sister. < sarcasm>

How come I didn't know basic english b4 moving here? ...
Again, In DR, Ecuador, are these fabolous First World countries like Belgium or South Korea where they have these public libraries with extensive volumes of English as a Second Language books, with video cassettes and everything. , or DR is just another Jamaica.

Few people do come already with some language skills, like my uncle. because he was working at tourists areas and practiced it. He wasn't speaking like Prince Charles of Wales, but he could get by fine once he went to U.S.

Before I went to Japan, I already knew basic Japanese. because??? They have the libraries in the U.S with plenty of books . They have the bookstores too, and I had the cash to buy those expensive books. In DR? Maybe if Mikushara Sakamoro Sensei is kind enough to teach you. Do you get my drift ?

Did you do any research about the history of all americans?

Sure, DR is like Finland, the most internet-wired country in the world.

I hope you get the point..Well, if you didn't let me make it clear for you... Most poor immigrants from latin america do not research anything..Well, how could they..most are illiterate...They all believe hey as long my poor behind make it to the USA I dont give a damn where I live..besides, I lived in a dirt floor home and had a donkey as my means of transportation..so moving to a cramped apartment with running water and 24/hr electricity is a step up..they even give you money at the 1st of the month and hey the have spanish canales I can finally watch novelas ...I can't wait to tell mi gente back home I moved to a nice villa that they call 'PUBLIC HOUSING'. Geez, it seems to be alot of morenos and puerto ricans living here. It appears they mostly stand in corners selling algo ...no sé pero it sure beats where I came from..
uhm, just give them cake too like Marie Antoniette from Charles Dicken's " A Tale of Two Cities" said. ( she didn't say it in real life, just in the novel) Very nice elitist pre-judgment of underprivileged people you have. Have you been frequenting Barbara Bush lately?

On a serious note look at the Xpats living in the DR...most do some research and at least have a small spanish/english dictionary with them...They usually don't go to places demanding someone to speak english..after all I think they realized hey in the DR they speak espanol...Usually, they would research on areas to live instead of moving to Capotillo....
wow, that is impressive. I've seen plenty of expats from the starving fields of Niger living in DR that told me they've done reseach with their laptops on DR from Niger while waiting for the sacks of grain from the UN. and yes, they were speaking to me in pretty good Spanish, seeing them with their electronic dictionaries of French/Spanish-Spanish/French, because we all know that all natives of Niger are fluent in French.

And I agree with you some hip hop & rap music are contributing to this..Why? because now this ignorant un'educated fools have a larger audience than their neighborhood to harrass. But with reggaeton is the same virus...even worse...because its spreading like wildfire in latinamerica..so the immigrants will already be exposed to this low life mentality...from the hispanics living in the ghettos in USA...
Reggaeton is not the same virus, reggaeton is hpv while hip hop is hiv. but that is for another thread

I don't think that Pakistanis, Asian Indians , an Ecuadorian, etc, feel they're " superior" or even ungrateful. Is that they've had these experiences with this particular group. You've got a Bangladeshi man that went throu some hell to get into the U.S, sometimes with just 20 bucks in his pocket , been working hard, saving every penny by living like a cockaroach for 10 years, no new clothes, no Sizzlers restaurants, no girlfriend, and opening up a little business, so these " hip hop gangstas" come and be stealing from his store.

These " gangstas" been earning like 300 bucks a week and go and buy a 150 dollars " Michael Jordan air sneakers". Most of the time all broke and then see with envy the Pakistani, the Chinese kid working at the restaurant. Going to the restaurant and making fun of them by talking a giberish of their language and thrashing the whole place up. Throwing a whole box of chicken wings bones on the floor one foot away from the thrash can.

I've never had any problems with the older African Americans, because I guess they've been thru some stuff back in the days, and these young " thugs, 50 centers" have been destroying everything they've worked so hard to build up. I support Bill Cosby because he is saying the truth.

Frankly, the root of the problem is that cancer called " hip hop/rap". It is just mind poison. These " gangstas" be thinking that the Asian Indian guy with the newstand is " can't never be a real American because he has a thick accent and should kneel to them because whitey is not kicking his arse thanks to the civil rights blacks were doing back in the days". It is true, Bangladeshis, Koreans, Dominicans, any immigrants off a plane or boat should be thankful to M.L King and others for the freedoms they enjoy now. ButI have contributed more to U.S society than most of these rats. I pay my taxes, never broken the law, done volunteer work, donated blood several times, and a veteran that have defended my country in the military(as a field Marine). Many " foreigners" go to U.S, not messing with anybody, and thus they getting bugged by both, whites and blacks? most of these people didnt' even think of encountering this " racism" from African Americans too !

I think you been lied to about what the "Hip Hop Culture" is, and what it can and cannot do to you. The fact that these folks robbed you is more of an indication of these individuals and there personal morals and choices as well as logistics at the time (the neighborhood you were in and if you appeared to be an easy target or not). The majority of the folks who purchase the hip hop you see on MTV are NOT from the areas like the one you were robbed in (granted I'm assuming you were in the so called "inner-city" when you were robbed). The same could happen to a person who wandered into a wrong part of the DR. However this doesn't condone the crime in anyway. Also, keep in mind Black History doesn't start and end with MLK. I think Communication is key here, because some of the things I see on this forum are off kilter to say the least.
