Dominicans in San Diego
Hi,
My name is Kristine Holley and I have been living in San Diego for almost a year now with my Dominican husband. I am absolutely amazed at all the Dominicans here in San Diego and all the events that they put together.
Tropical star is a great restaurant and a great grocery store for Dominican food, especially plantanos. I lived in the DR for 3 years and continue to cook Dominican food daily!
There is another restaurant downtown called Mangu, the owner is dominican and has amazing dominican food and music all the time. It reminds me of a club in Santo Domingo. Very nice, ALL dominicans on the weekends!
There is also Club Caribe. It is a Domincan owned disco and is very lively during the week and on the weekends. During the week about 20-30 dominicans get together there and drink brugal and play dominoes. They have music going, kind of like a colmado atmosphere! It is really fun and they have a buffet of GREAT dominican food. It is very laid back and a time to connect with other dominicans, some having lived here for over 30 years and others more recent. They really help each other with jobs etc. They also ahve their own gatherings and invite everyone, make sancocho etc. It is great!
I am a masters student at UCSD and my husband has met a TON of young Dominicans through the university as well as other Latin America students. It is really fun. We all get together for cooking nights and everyone brings different dishes and drinks and we eat and dance etc. We have made some amazing friends not only from the Dominican Republic, but from Argentina, Columbia, Mexico, Uruguay, Chile, Peru, etc.
My husband plays on a softball/baseball team with all Dominicans, he really enjoys it. He loves it here! There is always some game/event/gathering to go to, every night of the week. We cannot keep up!
Also, he has a few Dominican friends his age that live in Pacific beach. He calls them gringo/dominican. They do not get involved in a lot of the Dominican activities, but have their own group of about 7-8 Dominicans. They are always having BBQ and going to the beach as well.
I was so worried when we came here that my husband would not have any friends and it would be really hard. Now, we don't have enough time to go to everything and see everyone. It is really great! He has so much fun! It is really amazing how Dominicans stick together and really make an effort. When we go to Club Caribe there is such a huge mix of Dominicans, from all over the island and all ages, from 14 to 90. They have so much fun together, dancing, playing dominoes, eating, and drinking.
If there are any Dominicans that need some help getting connecting please contact me. There are a ton of Domincans in San Diego and it is an amazing place to live!
