Default Dominican mom...part of the diaspora....

A Dominican mom, working hard to make an honest buck, in New York city.....chasing that elusive American dream...one story of the many trying.

Quote:
The orders were coming in fast. Rice and pigeon peas, fried plantains, okra, tripe soup, and steak with onions. Inside a truck, nestled under a rocky drop from Highbridge Park in Upper Manhattan, four Dominican women, wearing multiple layers to protect them from the freezing January air, gracefully hustled to fill each order. They filled tins with hefty scoops of rice and ladles of soupy red beans.
One name was called out more than the rest. “Tania, give me a water!” “Tania, what’s on the menu today?” For Tania Sanchez, 38, the food truck filled with her homemade Dominican delicacies is her livelihood.

I know you call it an honest buck. But do you think she pays any taxes on this type of buisness? Not judging just making an observation.

It never ceases to amaze me how threads turn quick right or left hand turns from nowhere. So,in keeping with this tradition what does "paying taxes" have to do with the cost of apples in Ohio? And what does "not judging" mean other than PC for what you think about a street vendor and the tax law?

Sorrythat I have so many questions so early in the morning but just wanted to start my day on my usual cynical, grumpy mood..
Thanks for the inspiration.

Wow I've been called alot of things in my life. Inspirational has never been one of them. If you want to know the truth I can't stand these types of buisnesses that this woman owns. Take a ride through Washington Heights. These trucks take up three parking spaces, taxis double park to get their food, thus causing traffic jams. There is always a mess around these trucks because these people don't clean up. They don't provide garbage cans and I would guarantee these people don't pay taxes and are on government assistance. So now I am judging.

Gosh I'm surprised. How about 'judging' that she gives food on credit & has a handful of homeless customers who eat free?

It's cold, then hot. That's taxing enough.

Nice piece, Hidalgo.

What does giving food on credit mean? It means the person will pay you back. I doubt she gives credit to some one she doesn't know. When it comes to feeding the homeless she probably does what so many other buisnesses do in N.Y. The food that is left over at the end of the night she gives it to them. If she didn't give it to them it would be sitting outside on the street in a pile, for the rats to eat. I'd like to see a homeless person go up to her during the busy time of the day and ask her for food. These stories always throw in the feel good stuff at the end. I guess I'm a glass is half empty kind of guy or just a realist.

Heck, I knew you were" judging" all along. Just needed to get it out of you. Remember that old trick Ali (the boxer) would use. He hung on the ropes just kinda of getting hit poseing like he was half asleep (called it the rope a dope). That's what I was doing early this AM.
Anyway glad to hear from you,
john

Geeesh, you are concern about a lower income person on the bottom of the economic ladder not paying taxes!!!!....you and all of us should be more concerned about a Donald Trump type paying their fair share.....I think you have priorities upside down here.
