I had a lot of fun last night with my Dominican friend who just arrived from Santo Domingo to Toronto. This was the first time he went out in Canada so it was a great break from the worries of starting your life over. We were the last to leave the place.
Carlos Cruz band didn't start setting up until 11 pm but I didn't care, it's like that at the Cevejaria where Son Ache play. I guess I'm getting used to it. Personally I think they should have had two sets and started at 10 PM.
The show itself was okay. Carlos Cruz and a few of his musicians are really great, but I think the new band is a work in progress. One of the songs he did last night, he "talked" over it, sang a little bit and then it was done. One of the songs where he introduced all the musicians and they did there little solo seemed too long. But he a very energetic, dynamic and when he's ON he's on.
I didn't think the sound system was very good at Latin Fever and didn't do him any justice. In fact, that club Latin Fever doesn't impress me much at all. By 11:15 the ladies' bathroom was a mess, by 12:15 there was broken glass on the floor in front of the sinks and it stayed that way all night. No hand towels, no toilet paper. I'm going to complain. It's disgusting. And the people have drink on the dance floor, drop their garbage all over. It makes El Rancho look like a classy establishment and it's a hole LOL, we know it. But at the least the people have better manners, once you stop dancing you should get off the dance floor or go to the front of the stage.
I heard a year's worth of trashy language in 15 minutes in the ladies bathroom! Sorry to complain but it really had an impact on my enjoyment of Carlos Cruz performance. But it this city it must impossible to be picky about where you perform when there are so few Latin clubs that have live music. Like I said I'm calling Latin Fever to tell them their bathrooms are a health hazard but what to do about the young women of our city?
Here's a link to
Carlos Cruz' myspace site and you can see the Salsa St Clair festival that gonzaga mentioned.
I hope we'll see more productions around the city that's the only way new band evolves and becomes excellent, Thanks samyprez of Prezent productions for bringing some heat into the city!
