Thumbs up Let's change the name of our nation to ......

.....something other than Republica Dominicana. It's not short, sweet and nifty enough like others' such as Cuba,Haiti.Peru,etc. Plus it will distinguish us from, as Brownskin noted: "those other negroes from Dominica". If the former Upper Volta, Ceylon and Zaire had the resolve to do it, so can we. I vote for "Hispaniola" or "Hispana". Whatd'ya say?

Hispana sounds like a tooth paste or cleaning product. Hispaniola is the entire island, including Haiti.

Most Dominicans, would likely pick Quisqueya (/ Kiss-ke-ya) the most popular nickname used by Dominicans for their country. Quisqueyanos (which is the opening word of the national anthem) is similar to the use of Boricuas for Puerto Ricans.

In PR's case de native-antillean word was Borikén, later changing to Borinquen.
Cuba was named Juana by Columbus, but Cuba always prevailed.

I would go for Quisqueya and im sure most Dominicans would agree .I just only wished some one would have thought of that 150 years ago. The current name to me is probably the only thing the poeple back then could have thought about (back then the only name we had was Santo Domingo , which from what i understand is Saint Dominic in spanish, hence we would be called Dominicanos) , but w/e , its Quisqueya

Don't know about this! I love the sound of the word but Quisqueyanos/as seem quite long. How is rest of the 'soundbite" world going to remember how to spell it?
