Whats hard to believe is that the government is willing to spend several hundred million dollars on this project but not talking about how to improve the energy situation in the country. I guess Dominicans just accept the fact that its 'normal' to be without power several hours per day and that solving this problem is not a priority. If it was a priority, politicians would be putting this first on the agenda.

Ironically, they mention the Metro will run on its 'own power source.'

It boggles my mind that they are planning on doing this when the schools are so underfunded that they are grateful for suitcases full of supplies brought by tourists. This is not to mention the Power system or general infrastructure. I'd be interested in knowing what the general DR population feels about this. If there was ever a good reason for a "huelga", I think this would be it!

It could be that I wrote one of those "***-u-me" type things, but judging from the previous machinations of Leonel, I don't think Brazil is the one who took the first step.

Leonel, like all politicians, is looking for a "posterity" thingy and the Metro seem to fit the bill. With his background in finance and economics, I just don't think he has all his do-nuts rolling together. His priorities are a little skewed here and it is evident he is focussing on HIS future and not that of the DR.

The government is pushing it hard, to the point of desperation.

A copy of the weekly newsletter 'Palacio' issued by the government press office has fallen into my possession. The lead story on P1 is 'The Metro - Solution for public transport'. The editor's comment on P2 is 'The Metro is a necessity'. P5 includes a piece called 'The Metro will revolutionise transport'.

What happened to that one guy that is always on here supporting the government. Usually he perks up about now. Haven't heard from him on this one.

I'm still around. I've been very busy lately which reflects in my lower DR1 postings in the past few weeks.

However, I won't be posting much else on the Metro because I am against the project because its in government hands. I would love to see a Metro in this city, but not under government initiative, financing or otherwise.

Besides, regardless how much people debate about this on DR1, the reality is that it's goiing to get built anyway. It's better to give this issue a rest...

"Huelgas" I don't think so! I believe in sending a clear message to the government using the media, the same way "Diandino" is using them, "WE DO NOT WANT A METRO" AT LEAST NOW!!! lets not go for that lawn or if we are going to go for it hey!!!! lets invested in the Dominicans, Public services, education etc. etc., lets think about those CHOFERES DE CARROS PUBLICOS Y GUAGUAS that we'll be with out a job, the years digging will affect the merchants in the metro zone, it's more to this than electricity, education and health/..

I see every body here talking about the power situation and it's true it looks like we understand that it's Ok to be with out power for a few hours every day, but our culture is use to "Trujillo/ Balaguer" Paternalism, but the reality these days is if we don't pay our public services we can't have them. For what I see here must of you leave or leaved in the US, if that is the case "HEY" you pay your "BILLS" right?! Provably we can improve the electricity generation when ALL OF US HERE IN DR (Lower class, middle class and the wealthy) pay for the power we consume, understand I’m against the METRO S@%! But the electricity issue can be worked on, now not having the right environment to educate our children and youth, not having enough beds in the hospitals or enough drugs to give to a patient are things Diandino and Leonel have to think about!!!!
