The metro seems like a good idea and would be a good thing to do it now, since every year it will only get even more expensive to build it.

However, I don't fully support this project (not as much as I support Ciudamar) because its in government hands and we all know what happens under the government.

Now, if the metro was to be privately funded and maintained, then it would get my full support.

Maybe the government could sell the project afterwards (they are privatizing everything nowadays) and it will be in private hands afterwards? That could be a possibility, but its no doubt that SDQ will eventually need a metro. It's better to start early than late, but I'm not sure the government should be behind this, at least not 100%.

Nals,

Not discounting the possible need.. but where is the money coming from.. who's gonna pay for it? Aren't there more pressing needs like electricity?

Reminds me of school last year, in Las Lomas de Azua, where many rural children live too far away from school to walk, plus most are too poor to take the public transportation (motoconcho). To solve this problem, the Secretary of Education purchased thousands upon thousands of Chinese made bicycles and distribuited them among families with the agreement that the bicycles should be returned at the end of the school year, in perfect condition. Well, to make a long story short, before the second month, all the bicycles were beyond useless. I can just imagine taking one of these children on the Santo Domingo subway (metro). Somehow it would seem obscene. Of course, this is one country you know, and there should be priorities... Just mho

I want it to be on the record that I think this could be a good idea, in 15 years perhaps.

Megalomaniacal projects and centering all their investment in Santo Domingo is what killed the PLD last time around and opened the door for Hipólito. Should this project even start I think we should get all ready for Presidente Gómez Mazara. I'll be on a boat to Guatemala.

Interesting story Mirador. For some reason I am not at all surprised that the School Board would rather make an outright capital purchase with no "reasonable" expectation of a fiscal return of the property than to contract with a bus/van operator....ie. an initial school bus system !!

I wonder what the hell they were thinking...DR would be more like China??
Sounds like my local school board in the States.

That's why I am not fully in support of this Metro project.

I say no fully in support, because I know that sooner or later the city will need a mass transit system of such type. This city is will continue to appropriate more people and land, remember there is still another half of the population in the countryside, many getting ready to come to the Capital.

However, I would fully support the Metro Project if it was in private hands, not in government hands.

The government should focus on other matters, but the private sector should take the lead in creating this service that will be much needed in the years to come.

Lightbulb I Have A BETTER Idea!And 1000 Times CheaperToo!

Why not just ENFORCE the existing traffic laws? Why not produce enough electricity to run the traffic lights! Why not have an annual vehicle inspection? Why not have all people who want a Drivers License have to pass a "REAL" exam? Both written and driving"!Why not have Mandatory Comprehensive Car insurance? Why not maintain the roads and highways? Why not.....................,"Oh Hell, why not just move to the USA,and avoid all those problems???"

Dominican Government Motto"!!

"If You Never Build It,You Can Never STEAL from It!"

There is no,"Private Sector" in the DR!!!!!!The "Government" has it's "HANDS" in the pockets of every large Public Works Project in this Country! And you want more??
How about the "Privatization" of the electric Companies? Now THERE is a Great Example of "Privatization"!!!!!!!!!
Just how many miligrams of "Prozac" do you have to take on a daily basis to get the view that the DR is in such a great economic state??

What do DR1 members think of Alfonso Vergara's comments on Sto. Domingo and his opinion on how Ciudadmar should be built?
Also, I read that Leonel Fdez. was presented today with several alternatives to the proposed metro in order to improve public transportation in the city. What do you think of those?

It's all on the front page of DR1.

I firmly believe that this guy (Diandino) must have something on Leonel...It is the only way it can be explained why this guy keeps getting appointed to certain posts under Leonel's governments. This guy is disliked (hated really) by everyone including PLD people. He mismanaged tons of money last time the PLD was in power. Everyone thought this time around he would not be appointed to any post, but lo and behold Leonel puts him in charge of this project (throws him a bone), which even though pretty much everyone agrees that it's undoable at this time (no funds) we will forge ahead with it, because for some reason Leonel cannot say no to this guy...
It makes me wonder what this guy knows about Leonel...
What will the IMF think of this???
