And I am talking about a real plan one that really incorporates the need for population growth, needs for schools, etc. This is about HAVING A VISION of what the major cities of DR should look like in 5, 10, 15, 20 ,30, 40 , 50 years.

Here is what a friend of mine who is a transportation planner and I have been discussing:
Deni, Curitiba is a wonderful example of what could be in Latin America and the Caribbean, and can be when city officials put their minds & wills to it and the political commitment to the changes spans many administrations. [And you know well how I love Brazilian examples!] But frankly, I have seen little inclination in any Dominican administration, past or present (or for the foreseeable future), toward full-fledged planning and a commitment to implementation that spans more than the next year or so. I wish I could say otherwise, but this observation is based on 19 years exposure to Dominican governments and politicians...

Keith

Default Easy

Is easy to start and finish but here is my question who is going to kept the rail in condition ?

Here some facts:

1: People throwing garbage inside and outside.
2: about rain "Water in SDQ" has not place where to go.
3: When this "Metro" is broke down how long is it going to take to move it away or fix it?
4: Will the gov. pay on time to that company who will be responsible for maintaining the "Metro working".

Just looking at the Boulevard 27 de Febrero. at the begining it was a very nice atraction to see the laser lights and the clock working. what happen to those lights?

Autopista Duarte Seņores! a lot of money invested was a great job but where are the street lamps?

One last question how is it goin to help the country financially is like Faro a Colon to much money for nothing because that is not providing job to the people who live there ?

I can see by 2007 this metro underground with the bolbs burned.

Pa' donde que vamos Dios mio.....

Default New Metro System- mas disparates

As I was reading about the proposed Santo Domingo Metro, I was just shaking my head. The preliminary costs, in my view, is the mother of all rosy scenarios. For one thing, there has not been one metro system in the world that came under or within budget. That said, there has not been one metro system in the world that correctly estimated the long-term maintenance costs of the system. As we all know, things have to be serviced, maintained. And usually that liability can be even more expensive over time than the cost of the system... Then is the artificial low cost of the fares. It is obvious that the government will have to subsidize the fair to keep it at the low proposed prices. Bottom line: this system will not be able to pay for itself and will become an open-ended liability that will saddle the public with even more foreign debt. Mas disparates!

Keith
I know. Trust me I feel your pain. At the heart of the matter what happened to Curitiba is the result of having a REAL architect on site.

Chiri,
Duh! My time is not what it used to be.

Abrazos,
D

Uh new subway system huh. I guess crime in santo domingo will rise. Defently will get people on the go faster, but I see problems of crime. Mugging, pushing people of the platform you know the regular subway systems.

Default Ac

How about if the government concentrated on the AC supply instead. I for one feel very strongly that if any loans should be taken it should be in an effort to do something about the electricity situation!

As Merengue Dutchie points out:

http://www.railway-technology.com/projects/meteor/
Paris -- 7 kms. EUR1 billion -- 5 years

http://www.railway-technology.com/projects/ns_metro/
Amsterdam 2003-2011 about 8 kms EUR1 billion

10 kms for US$326 M and 3-4 years according to Diandino Peņa? I agree it looks more like 10 years and US$1 billion. I think the figure of US$326 million is being used like the figure of RD$500 million was used by Jose Joaquin Puello when defending the celebration of the Pan American Games that others say cost more than RD$8 billion.
