But we should be honest, NO ONE can build a metro in 3 years. Dominicans are so gullible. Los Angeles started their metro in 1986 and now is when they are beginning the second line project. Now imagine dominican drivers transitting a city cut in half by the construction of the metro (since there are sections above ground).

Leonel seems to have a little Dominican York complex going on. I'd be more practical, let the economy heal a little first and in may or so, take the money and re-start the Samana highway, extend the by-pass (elevado) systems in Santiago and Santo Domingo and repair the duarte bridge, finish the San Pedro bridge and the extension of the autovia del este wich circumvents La Romana.

I think is a ripoff that the study alone costs 700+MM pesos (24 MM US). There is no way they can yet determine the exact cost of the metro. For a Dominican metro which will have buscones, frituras, yaniqueques, beggars, thieves robbing wallets and cops sitting around. You'll have to put signs that read, no large animals allowed but everyone here knows what dominicans think of signs. There will be a little kid at the door of the metro helping/hustling people in and getting them a chair. Then they will form a sindicato and yaddah, yaddah ,yaddah.....c'mon people l!!

Default The "Metro" Makes PERFECT sense!!!

Unfortunately, you have to use "Dominican Logic" for it to make sense!!!

"Dominican Logic",...."We can't run a Public Bus Line in Santo Domingo,so lets build a "Sub-Way" line!!"

The "Metro" is being sold as 1/3 cheaper to build than the "San Juan"PR.,line! 2/3s faster to build than the "California" line, and at 10 pesos per ride,(33 US pennies) six times cheaper to ride than anywhere else in the World!

The ONLY "thing" six times cheaper to "ride" in the DR than anywhere else in the World,is "PU$$.....................,well,YOU KNOW WHAT!!!!!!!!

The "Tie Breaker" for this Mega-Project,is that the basket will be so full of eggs, that there will be "Omlets" for everyone!!

The projest will take sooooooo long, and involve soooooo much money, that even the political parties that are out of power can count on being there for some "omlets" themselves! Therefore everyone can support the project!

Default There's a need for it but it's not urgent

There is a need, as I recall many times that I said to myself while living down there 'I wish they had a subway so there won't be so many damn carro publico here' but it was a pipe dream. For their sake, I hope it remains a dream too. Fix the hospital and Botica Popular situation, the highway from San Pedro to Punta Cana, the streets in Herrera, the Duarte bridge, the Linea Noroeste waterworks project, but don't build the subway.

I'll never change my position because there is definitely a need but their priorities are all mixed up and they don't care about the people anyways. My mom just decided to move back to Miami, I guess that 10 years down there were enough. I wonder what the old-money folks down there think about all this. I heard Diandino mention something about getting private funding if Congress doesn't approve this project. I hope it all goes to hell and if not, then let it be a privately-funded effort in which they do all their homework first, like using tunneling machines vs the dig-a-ditch-and-cover-it method and avoiding any sewage lines that Trujillo had built in the 50s......

Besides, $5 and $10 pesos for each ride, they'll never ever ever make their money back

Leo seems pretty smart to me! There will be so much money to steal from this project that he'll never have to run for president again. From kickbacks to bribes, he and his friends will be rolling in dough.

Yeah, I am sure some people call it a public works project, but Leo calls it his nest egg.

Leo's retiring in style and it won't be in Santo Domingo, perhaps Manhattan or Buenos Aires .

"Los Angeles started their metro in 1986 and now is when they are beginning the second line project."

Not quite true.
Los Angeles has four lines already built: blue, green red and gold. And another one in the works.

What is under construction now is the extension to the gold line that is to travel through East LA.

Default Correct me if I'm wrong, but.......

......Hasn't the Duarte bridge over the Ozama been out of commission for something like five years now? Has it been repaired yet? If not, why not?......Am I to understand that Billions will be invested in an idiotic undertaking BEFORE the basic and indispensable infrastructure throughout our impoverished nation is at least patched up? Where the heck is this government's sense of priority?.....I thought Leonel had better insight into our nation's needs....guess not. He's beginning to act more like the hated HIPPO than the man most of us voted for. Poop on you if you go through with this!

Default The Brazilians have grabbed the hook-----

However, with about US$150 million less than envisioned in the original proposal. Will the World Bank foot the bill for the remaining $$$$$ millions, or will the government merely float additional bonds to complete the job before the glaciers melt and the water rises to engulf Santo Domingo and the Cibao??

Only TIME will tell!!!!!

I'm betting on the rising tide.

Default "JonS",there is a big difference between "Need",and "Want"!

The "Politicos" of the DR may "Want" a Metro",but the people do not "Need"one!
I "want" a second home in Casa de Campo",I don't "need" one!
It is more a question of "priorities",weather talking about a city/country,or a "family"! I can only afford so much.My wants vastly exceed my needs.I therefore look to fulfil the needs of my family before attending to their/my wants.
In the DR,the "Government" proposes "Public Works Projects" that they say are needed by the "People",when in reality they are just a means to steal from those very same people in the name of "The Greater Good"!!!
There are many many cheaper, quicker,"easier" ways to improve the public transport system in Santo Domingo, they just make it difficult to steal a few "B"illion dollars at the same time!
1. Busses
2.Overpasses
3.Traffic control

Angry I'm just a little peeved.......

Honestly, Criss, the things I read about or hear about every day are starting to get on my nerves. Let me rephrase that one, they've been getting on my nerves from the time that I used to live there. I'm surprised you haven't decided to go back to Boston yet. The DR is where I was born, where I did high school and where I learned the value of working hard to get what you want (kinda ironic, isn't it?). But the sh1t hit the fan, brother. I honestly want to tell the people of the DR to sit on a Twizzler and go fukk themselves but that's not politically correct. People there will never learn.

My father keeps telling me 'ven de vacaciones nada mas, no para vivir' which means only come here for a vacation but don't move here ever again. I think I'll stick to the US......regardless of what people say here about Dominicans being nice, I believe that my people are inherently evil and selfish. It starts in the upper crust and goes down to the meat of the pie, or general population, whatever description you see fit. I'm going there next month to see my girl and my family, but I don't have any other reason to go. Hopefully they learn when something bad happens. Out of something bad, good must come........

Default Chris, I think------

you may have hit the nail on the head insofar as solutions to the "Traffic Problems" in the DR.

The problem is Traffic Control. I'm not sure Dominicans will EVER learn to properly handle their vehicles in a manner that will ensure smooth flow of vehicular traffic within the confines of "marked" lanes. They're just too accustomed to pulling a little in front of adjacent vehicles, switching lanes and letting the devil take the hindmost! Perhaps if the Metro Police were a little more attentive to enforcing the laws, good driving practices and responsible attention to driving conditions, things MIGHT be better. By those enforcements and appropriaate fining of violators the National Debt woulld be retired in very short order.

Bad and irresponsible driving habits are endemic to all countries where strict enforcement of laws and common decency don't exist. And the USA is no better, especially in the larger urban areas. But, at least an effort is made to control the baser instincts of drivers.
