I don't know but leonel is a big copycat and he is not going to rest until he sees Santo Domingo mirror a cheap copy of New York.

They said that they are gonna start letting the public know about the project through the radio and and tv.

Default Said it before and I'll keep saying it

This is a major boondoggle that will only benefit those who are sponsoring it. The DR will be paying for this idiocy for many decades to come, and the worst thing is that they know this and don't care. "Serve the Party"" is their working thesis. THEN comes the country.

The really sad thing is that there is nothing on the horizon, no political alternative, to substitute these clowns. The PRSC are as bad or worse than the PRD and the PLD will prove to be the "Come Solos" of 1996-2000. And if the people think that the "new " generation of the PRD-the Orlando Jore Meras as so forth, are going to be any better than the PPHs & Hippo, they are sadly mistaken. Ever hear of that saying: "The apple never falls far from the tree?"
And they have included Gómez Mazara in the group?? GMAB!!

Back to the OP.

A Metro, either above ground or (gulp!) below ground, is so expensive to build and maintain, that the Spanish/Catalán architect Bofil was even surprised enough to come out and question it. He called it a "political dream".
Now this is a person whose opinion must be respected. But no, the next day, Diandino came out with comments to the tone of "IT WILL BE BUILT" ..Shoot, that was like the Pope that said "God wills it! {Deus Volt!}" back in 1091 and started the Crusades....

BOONDOGGLE by any other name is still a ripoff!!

Default Has this been confirmed?

When was this confirmed? Last I read about the potential metro system was in el Caribe, January 12, 2005 and there was speculation about building the metro but a decision was not reached. My opinion is that a metro would not resolve the city's transportation problem if the infrastructure is weak. Based on past history of unfinished projects and poor planning will this metro be added to the list? Outside of the political objectives, how much will this metro cost, who is going to build it, how extensive is it going to me, what other transportation systems i.e. buses will be linked to it and who will be paying for it in the long run (actually this question I can answer myself). I hope this does not come to pass because although the objective would be to resolve a current chaotic transportation system (if you could call it that) it would only add to the numerous financial burdens that ultimately affect the population. The DR governments past and present need to stop putting the cart before the horse.... infrastructure, proper planning, cost estimates, electricity, a linked transportation system should be top consideration and priority. I say this will be a complete fracaso por falta de visión.

I guess it's easier to make the potholes bigger and build a Metro, then pave the road's once every ten years.

Gist Translation

*An expert in public transportation confirmed that the construction of a metro in Sto. Domingo will not resolve the city's transportation problem that is currently described as chaotic.

*In his opinion he does not foresee the current planning of the metro as being as extensive as the New York and Madrid systems due to the costs and the time is takes to build.

* The expert suggested the creation of an organization (group) integrated by the State and private sector that would regulate all issues related to transportation and its efficiency.

*The current administration initiated the study of a possible metro in Sto. Domingo and the results will be released in a few months.

they better put this thing underground!!!! Can you imagine the number of traffic accidents "trolley cars" would cause!!!! Bottom line with the DR's history of little or no maintenance the Metro will last 5 - 7 years tops.

Default I fully support Hillbilly on this one!!!

Such a giganticly expensive project in the light of the overall debt of the country is absolutely idiotic!!!

Where in the He** is the money going to come from to pay for a project of this magnitude? Certainly not out of the government budget, which is already overtaxed to repay CURRENT DEBT! AND if yet another loan is taken out (to pay for a project which will last for several years) where will the money come from to pay back the loan??? Additionally, projects of this magnitude ALWAYS will run into almost ruinous cost overruns and once started, can't seem to be stopped because of the money already spent!!!

Personally, I am of the opinion that this boondoggle would best be left for future generations to accomplish if it becomes a national endeavour.

However, it seems like another "Hipolito Scam" of insupportable magnitude to me.

Didn't we just have a thread on this?? UNFINISHED PUBLIC WORKS PROJECTS...or something like that.

This is so gonna look like that ugly eyesore on the Malecon. Hell, Has San Juan opened their subway yet? If not, then I know that project's been atleast 10 years in the making.
